Pseudocyst

The adventures and life of a Specialist Nurse in Upper GI and Bariatric surgery. If you then double and triple this by having a primary school age child AND being married to another Nurse then you have double the trouble….aehm I mean fun. Hobbies are playing chess, board games and being taxi for our son!!!

Is the weekend for resting?

I guess when you don’t have children and you have a Monday -Friday 9-5 job then the header is true.

I barely remember a lie in before we’ve had our son let alone having a weekend for yourself to do what you like.

I am pretty sure it must be the same for my wife. Don’t get me wrong I wouldn’t have it any other way and having seen Shrek 4 trying to go back to the “good olden days” didn’t turn out so great.

My wife was working yesterday (and today) therefore tennis at 9am followed by swimming at 11.30am. A quick lunch and then going to the local football team match day (family day) and meet up with some friends and their kids.

Kick off was at 3pm therefore we didn’t leave the stadium until after 5pm. Went over to my mates house and had hotdogs and fries. We didn’t leave until just after 7pm and on the way home a quick stop at Tesco’s to buy some milk and bread (otherwise no breakfast).

To mine and our sons surprise my wife got home just after 8pm which is close to a miracle. She usually is 1hr late coming home and I feel like that shouldn’t be the case.

Every time this happens I try to explain to her that certain issues/problems need to be handed over to the doctors and that you just can’t do everything. This is a difficult lesson to learn and to deal with. But if you are not doing this your years within the NHS working are shorter than staying in the NHS as a patient.

YOU JUST BURN OUT!!!!

The NHS is run on “the good will of their workers” and that is partly why nurses and other health care workers are under valued. I think we selling ourselves short all the time. Staying longer despite not getting paid for it, acting up when we not getting paid for it etc.

The interesting thing about the above is that people argue that this is the only way to climb up the ladder and that this makes you an experienced health care worker. “Claim back your hours!!!” – how and when? Rarely do you see this in any other businesses.

There is a lot of things health care professionals do which are technically not in their contract or not part of their role. Once it’s in the mindset that this is acceptable it just escalates.

But what do I know. In my very first post I stated that these blog entries are fictional and any resemblance to real life is just coincidental.

Despite all of the above: The majority of nurses and other health care workers love what they do despite the horrendous working conditions, pay, bullying (sorry it’s not called bullying anymore *facepalm*)

So, are the weekend for resting? TOTALLY!!! I rather run around and accommodate our son than the above. Everybody at work is replaceable – I have no qualms about that.

What are our kids remembering when we are constantly at work? We didn’t spend the time with them when we could have done that more.

This might be a bit simplistic but the bottom line is: Its true!!
