Pseudocyst

The adventures and life of a Specialist Nurse in Upper GI and Bariatric surgery. If you then double and triple this by having a primary school age child AND being married to another Nurse then you have double the trouble….aehm I mean fun. Hobbies are playing chess, board games and being taxi for our son!!!

Easter weekend

Weekend off and its a long one with Friday (well, I was working Good Friday) and Easter Monday off.

My wife was slaving away on the surgical admission ward whilst I entertained our son. Not sure which is easier sometimes.

Tennis at 9am for 1hr. That just one of his 2x 1hr weekly sessions currently in addition to his monthly County training. Just 6 years old and already selected for the County.

He started playing tennis when he was just over 3years old and seemed to enjoy it. As my wife plays tennis as well it seemed natural that she went with him most of the times. Especially when one of the days is a Tuesday afternoon and it was one of her days off.

She was telling at some point “I think he is really good!”

My usual response was “Are you sure and you are not just biased?”

“No, I am telling you compare to the other kids he is really good.”

That was it and I though this is just her seeing something which other people don’t see – you know being the parent etc.

Long and behold a letter/email arrived in the summer last year saying something along the lines of: Congratulations you child coach has put him forward for the County Trials!!!!!

You should have seen the smug face of my wife telling me – you guessed correctly – “I TOLD YOU SO!!!!”

Still sceptical we all went to that Sunday afternoon and half of the kids turn up in their private school sports uniform thinking “No way does he make the team!”

Having seen him playing really for the first time in a 2hr session with coaching from the County team was interesting and daunting. The first time really that he had a long session like this. A Sunday afternoon after a busy week and weekend.

He did well although my wife said he is usually better and after the two hours it was all done. Before we left the coaching team then just said: “Wait for the email with a yay or nay!!”

A week later the email arrived with instructions on how to create a LTA account as our son made the team and to cough up more money for the upcoming 3 month (think around £60 for 4x 2hr session). Which isn’t really that much in all fairness. It was also suggested to sign him up for another training session during the week making it 2x 1hr session at the local club (another £35 extra). Thinking about it now Tennis and swimming (both at the same gym) are roughly £105 a month plus £60 every quarter for the county training.

Anyway, he likes it and the enhanced training stuff is now going on for nearly 18 month.

We’ll see where this leads to.

We skipped swimming as he has got an elbow injury (falling off the zip line and having a massive graze on his elbow) so from tennis we went home, changed, took the books which needed to be returned to the library, took a bag with board games, and went to the local library.

Every last Saturday in the library they host a board game day – this is organised by the board game club I am also a member of.

Once we returned the books and audiobooks we joined the board game fun. Not as many children there yesterday as usual but that must be because it is Easter and some of them are away.

Our son was teaching My first Carcassonne to some other kids there and then proceeded to show them SOS Dino which we play quite frequently at home.

We also played a game of Azul – we have the travel version at home – and some of the adults were impressed with the youngsters playing it.

The library has a cafe which is run by a charity trying to give jobs to youngsters with mental health problems. We therefore had lunch at the library which is also reasonably priced.

We stayed therefore a good 3-4hrs before going home and making homemade pizza (mostly Salami).

And with that the day was gone by quickly. By the time my wife got home our son was still up ready to go to bed.

Once he was in bed Easter treats were hidden around the house for him to hunt in the morning.
